Queen Elephantine is interesting for several reasons. One of them is coming from Hong Kong last year, though their leader was based in New York (USA) and reformed the band. On the other hand, they have taken advantage of the possibilities that the Internet to contact other groups and seals, which is made possible, in a few years, recording two albums "split" with bands stoner / doom / sludge as ELDER AND SONS OF OTIS, both with good reviews, and participate in various compilations.
This brings us to 2008 and this debut album, Surya, self-produced and released through his own label. I had the opportunity to hear in advance the unmastered version, and really glad to see that the underground and independence can lead to good results, as I could see once I had the disc in your hands.
But does it sound? Sounds like a Hindu mantra sung by the illegitimate children of BLACK SABBATH, sounds as if a group of musicians from Woodstock had been abducted by UFOs, taken to the desert and abandoned to their fate with many records of drone and doom. His music is slow and heavy, hypnotic, repetitive, psychedelic and dense. Through the first four items, they will alternately meditative atmosphere and traveling more, which coincide with shorter songs, with heavy environments and more pronounced rhythm. Without which there is a contrast, but a kind of progression in which we move from the heavy of "Ramesses II," 16-minute-a hypnotic density "Kabir".
Point complex, the "white elephant" of the disk, it is the last track, "Bison." You know the story of the white elephant: the king who wants to harm a subject without being noticed and gives him a snow-white elephant, the subject is grateful for the unique gift, but is ruined by the high cost of keeping the animal opossum. Something similar happens here, recording a track of 27 minutes, even on an album aimed at an audience that we can suspect that the substance use leads them to search for sounds "cosmic" and pasted, no longer a risk. Fill a pure mind, to be the worst song of the album, right down to the final level. Anyway, this "Bison" gets saved if you find the time to immerse yourself in its sounds. Good
debut album, in short, for SLEEP fans, YOB, OM, psychedelia and experimental sounds. Not recommended listen without time constraints.
